Welcome – A Letter from the Founder

September 2010

Greetings:

It's hard to believe that PAVE is now a third year school! The start to the school year has never run more smoothly.

When I get the chance, I love to peek my head into classrooms. On our third day, as I walked through the halls, I saw Kindergarten students sitting eager, alert and raising their hands to answer questions. I saw First Graders writing vigorously in journals and second and third graders silently pouring through books. At our first Friday Community Meeting, the hallways resonated with the sound of our scholars bellowing their class cheers proudly. It was September 3rd and we were in December form!

Many already felt at home in the classrooms and hallways thanks to the summer program run by Teach for America and hosted by PAVE. More than 60% of our students attended this summer, where they focused on math, reading and writing in the morning. This summer we added a new wrinkle. Third-year Kindergarten teacher Sabrina Bedward spearheaded a partnership with Good Shepherd Services in the afternoons so that many of our participating students could enjoy a traditional, enriching summer camp experience.

But I really think the strong start to the school year is a testament to the cohesiveness of the PAVE team. We have 6 new staff this year and our entire staff of 25 — returning and new — spent two weeks together in August setting big goals for the current year, enhancing our rigorous curriculum, and doing team-building activities. We are dynamic, committed, energetic and willing to stop at nothing to ensure the success of all of our scholars. PAVE remains committed to fostering the emotional and social development of our students through the re-enforcement of PAVE's 4 Core Values — Perseverance, Achievement, Vibrance and Excellent character. Please give us a call if you would like to attend a Community Meeting where we celebrate our Core Values in style!

The parents of our PAVE students remain our most ardent supporters. Already this year they have collectively spent dozens of hours volunteering to assist teachers and administrators and support student learning.

The parents of a new student just told me how much their 1st Grade son loves PAVE. “This is school?” he asked them. “I don't want to leave!” That is the best news for me. We want our children to embrace learning, to feel supported and challenged in our classrooms, and to feel like PAVE is more than a school — it is a community.
