The PAVE Bots, PAVE’s Lego Robotics team, have been working for the last few months to create an innovative solution to improve the lives of senior citizens. Here is what they came up with:

Senior O-Matic

After talking to our senior partner, we realized that mobility is a difficult problem for many seniors. We thought about what we could do to improve the lives of seniors.

We came up with the idea of the Senior O-Matic. It includes an emergency button to help seniors in case of an emergency. It has a joystick to move around. It also has pockets that hold arms to help seniors reach high things. It also has claw clips that attach to any railing allowing the chair to move up or down stairs. There is another joystick that controls the wheelchair’s movement up or down the stairs. A fan on the back of the chair powers the chair up or down the railing. The wheelchair can be powered by solar energy or plugged into the wall.

We feel this is a great solution for seniors because it applies to lots of seniors who have mobility problems.

Like all public charter schools, PAVE receives less per pupil funding than traditional public schools and the public funding only covers a minimum academic program. Each year, PAVE’s operating need must be supplemented by private dollars so that we can continue providing a rigorous, comprehensive education to each of our scholars.

PAVE’s new school building is nearly complete! The facade is done and our team is putting the finishing touches on the interior. We were fortunate that the building sustained minimal damage during Hurricane Sandy and our team is working around the clock to ensure a year-end move. We can’t wait to welcome our scholars to their permanent home in January!

This morning, PAVE welcomed 250 enthusiastic scholars to our new (but temporary) home! Smiles were abundant as our team greeted each student and showed them to their cozy, creative classrooms. Instruction resumed at 7:50am and, even after an 11-day hiatus, it was as if we never skipped a beat. Our accelerated re-opening was made possible by the tremendous dedication of our entire team, a group of all-star volunteers, and the support of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and other government agencies.

It has been an exciting couple of days on the PAVE front! On Friday morning we had no idea where or when we would re-open PAVE and by Friday afternoon we had secured temporary space inside the PAL Miccio (a community center/former Head Start operator in Red Hook). Over the last 4 days, our staff has come together to relocate our school and prepare for students’ return on Wednesday.
